Free Heritage Skills Training Courses
MASONRY SKILLS
learn how to build a traditional lime-mortared granite stone wall
staff member Guto Jones will be training people how to build a traditional stone house wall using reclaimed stone and haudralic lime. The stone wall will be a foundation for the later straw bale walls
TRADITIONAL OAK TIMBER FRAMING
learn how to chose convert and frame up a new building with locally sourced oak timber
the training willl be ongoing throught the winter and will cover every asect of traditional oak timber framing from the care of hand tools to the cutting of specialist joints and raising heavy frames. Dafydd Davies-Hughes and Alice Midmore will be leading the work.

In addition to the ongoing heritage & conservation skills training the centre runs regular accredited courses, in partnership with Coleg Harlech, on a wide variety of practical skills including :
Using lime
course covers: a practical understanding of the production, care and different uses of lime mortars including pointing, plastering wattle & daub and limewashing with pigments. The courses enable participants to be able to source and use lime safely and successfully in both repair/conservation and new/eco-build applications.
This Autumn and next spring ( 2012/3) we will be partnering the National Trust, through the Heritage Lottery Funded LLyn Landscape Partnership project, to offer free courses during the repair and renovation of two traditional crog-loft cottages here on Mynydd Rhiw.
Woodland management
course covers: planning, planting tree care ,species identification & ecology, the carbon cylcle & sustainability, woodland coppice crafts and the history of woodland management in Britain.
Organic Gardening
includes garden design & planting plans, composting, weeds,pests & diseases, tools & techniques, plant varieties and ecology
Eco-Building Techniques
course covers a range of different construction methods from earth walling, cob and stone to green oak & timber frame, thatching, traditional pegged slating, limeplastering,pointing and limewashing

Heritage & Eco -Building Skills
Green Oak Timber Framing:
Participants will learn how to convert oak logs, plan,lay-out and cut the basic joints used in traditional green oak joinery using a range of hand and power tools.
The training will introduce students to the history of oak timber framing, different methods and tool care.This project will be a rare opportunity to join in the making of a great Welsh Cruck-oak barn and a valuable community resource.
The building design will incorporate traditional and contemporary features with the aim of creating an inspiring working environment of natural grace and beauty. A space to nourish soul and spirit.
 
Stone Walling and Cob Building:
Stone Walling(autumn -winter): The training will cover: building a traditional dry stone wall and building a lime mortared stone foundation wall. Participants will learn the principles of both dry and mortared stone walling. The finished wall will form the foundation for a cob wall.
 
Cob Building (May to September ): The training will cover the construction of a structural cob and earth wall, looking at local examples and wattle and daub
